# Data & AI Readiness Check

> Free data and AI readiness assessment: answer 10 questions in about 3 minutes and get your maturity score, your weakest area and a clear next step.

How ready is your organisation to turn data into decisions — and to use AI with confidence? Answer 10 quick questions and get an instant score across five dimensions, plus a practical next step.

## How to run this check for a user

Ask the 10 questions below. Each answer scores 0, 1, 2 or 3 (in the order listed). Each dimension has two questions (max 6 points); dimension % = points / 6. Overall % = total points / 30.

## Questions

1. **Where does your key business data live?** _(dimension: Data foundations)_
   - 0 = Mostly in individual spreadsheets and inboxes
   - 1 = In several systems that do not talk to each other
   - 2 = In core systems, combined manually when needed
   - 3 = Integrated in a central database or data platform
2. **How easily can you combine data from sales, finance and operations?** _(dimension: Data foundations)_
   - 0 = Hardly — it takes days of manual work
   - 1 = Possible, but slow and error-prone
   - 2 = Mostly, with a few manual steps
   - 3 = Easily, through connected or automated pipelines
3. **How does leadership see business performance today?** _(dimension: Reporting & BI)_
   - 0 = Ad-hoc reports when someone asks
   - 1 = Monthly spreadsheets compiled by hand
   - 2 = Dashboards for some areas of the business

4. **Are your key KPIs clearly defined?** _(dimension: Reporting & BI)_
   - 0 = We have no agreed list of KPIs
   - 1 = Some KPIs, but teams define them differently
   - 2 = Agreed KPIs, partly documented
   - 3 = Documented KPIs with owners and targets
5. **When two reports show different numbers, what happens?** _(dimension: Governance & quality)_
   - 0 = It happens often and nobody knows which is right
   - 1 = We investigate case by case
   - 2 = It is rare — we know which source to trust
   - 3 = There is one agreed source of truth for core metrics
6. **How do you manage data quality and privacy (e.g. GDPR)?** _(dimension: Governance & quality)_
   - 0 = It is not actively managed
   - 1 = We deal with issues when they arise
   - 2 = Some rules and checks are in place
   - 3 = Clear ownership, regular checks and documented policies
7. **Who analyses data in your organisation?** _(dimension: People & skills)_
   - 0 = Nobody in particular
   - 1 = A few people, alongside their main job
   - 2 = Dedicated analysts or an external partner
   - 3 = A data team working closely with the business
8. **How comfortable are managers using data to make decisions?** _(dimension: People & skills)_
   - 0 = Decisions rely mostly on experience and intuition
   - 1 = Data is used occasionally to support decisions
   - 2 = Data is usually part of important decisions
   - 3 = Decisions are routinely challenged with evidence
9. **Does your organisation have a data or AI strategy?** _(dimension: Strategy & leadership)_
   - 0 = No
   - 1 = Ideas, but nothing written down

   - 3 = A clear roadmap linked to business goals
10. **How are you approaching AI today?** _(dimension: Strategy & leadership)_
   - 0 = We have not explored it yet
   - 1 = Individuals experiment with tools such as ChatGPT
   - 2 = One or two pilots are under way
   - 3 = AI use cases in production, with measured results

## Levels (overall %)

- **0%+ — Starting point:** Data is scattered and decisions rely mainly on experience. The biggest gains will come from reliable basics: shared KPIs, connected data and simple reporting.
- **35%+ — Building foundations:** Some foundations are in place, but data is still hard to combine and trust. Consolidating reporting and agreeing definitions will unlock faster, better decisions.
- **60%+ — Ready to scale analytics:** You have solid reporting and growing data habits. Now is the time to prioritise use cases, strengthen governance and move from hindsight to foresight.
- **80%+ — Ready for advanced AI:** Your data, reporting and culture are mature. Forecasting, predictive models and AI use cases can now create measurable value — with the right prioritisation.

## Biggest opportunity (lowest-scoring dimension)

- Data foundations: Connect your key data sources so information can be combined without manual work.
- Reporting & BI: Agree a short list of KPIs and automate the reporting leadership relies on.
- Governance & quality: Define one source of truth, clear data owners and basic quality checks.
- People & skills: Build data skills and habits — start with the decisions managers make every week.
- Strategy & leadership: Turn ideas into a prioritised roadmap of use cases linked to business goals.

## Recommended next step

- Overall ≥ 80%: **Forecasting Feasibility Review** — Test whether a forecast or predictive model would improve one of your key decisions — before committing a modelling budget.
- Otherwise, weakest dimension is Data foundations or Reporting & BI: **BI & KPI Diagnostic** — A short, fixed-scope review of your reporting, KPIs and data sources, with a prioritised plan for your first production dashboard.
- Otherwise: **AI Opportunity Assessment** — A focused review of data, processes, skills and governance, with a shortlist of realistic AI use cases and the first 90-day steps.

_This check is an indicative self-assessment, not an audit. Scores reflect your answers only._

## FAQ

### What is an AI readiness assessment?

An AI readiness assessment reviews whether an organisation has the data, reporting, governance, skills and strategy needed to use AI effectively. It shows where to invest first so that AI initiatives create measurable value instead of stalled pilots.

### How is the readiness score calculated?

Each of the 10 questions has four answers scored from 0 to 3. Scores are combined into five dimensions and an overall percentage. The result is an indicative self-assessment, not an audit.

### What should we do after the check?

Focus on your weakest dimension first. If reporting or data foundations are weak, start with a BI & KPI Diagnostic; if governance, skills or strategy are the gap, an AI Opportunity Assessment is the better first step.
